Whose Treachery?
The suffering and death of Jesus make very uncomfortable images. We see things that we'd prefer to ignore. We see the treachery and murderous spite of the Jewish leaders and the weakness of the Roman rulers; we see the anger of the mob and the brutality of the soldiers.
'The Passion' shows up mankind in the worst possible light . We cannot attach blame to those who took part in Jesus' torture and death without recognising some of their weaknesses and motives in ourselves.
Yes the Romans, the mob, and the Jewish leaders were treacherous, but the
most alarming part of the story is that our own treachery put Him on the cross.
And the cross shows us our desperate condition.
